What is osteopathy?
Discover how osteopathy uses a whole-body approach to help improve movement, ease discomfort and support your overall wellbeing.
At Holme Valley Osteopathy, one of the questions we are frequently asked is, “What exactly is osteopathy, and how is it different from physiotherapy?”
Osteopathy is a patient-centred healthcare treatment that focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing problems affecting the muscles, joints, ligaments and spine. Osteopaths take a holistic approach to treatment, looking at how the entire body functions rather than focusing solely on the area where symptoms are being felt.
The principle behind osteopathy is that the body functions best when its structure and movement are working in harmony. When joints become restricted, muscles tighten, or movement patterns are altered through injury, stress, poor posture or everyday wear and tear, pain and dysfunction can occur elsewhere in the body. Osteopaths are trained to identify these underlying causes and help restore normal movement and function.
Treatment typically involves a combination of hands-on techniques, including joint mobilisation, soft tissue massage, stretching, manipulation, exercise advice and lifestyle guidance. The aim is not only to reduce pain but also to improve mobility, support recovery and help prevent problems from returning.
Osteopaths look at the body as a connected whole. Rather than concentrating only on the site of pain, we assess how different areas of the body may be contributing to the problem.
For example, someone experiencing knee pain may actually have restrictions in their hips, pelvis or lower back that are affecting the way they move. By identifying and treating these contributing factors, osteopathy aims to address the root cause of the problem rather than simply managing symptoms.
Osteopathic treatment is often highly hands-on and may include:
• Joint mobilisation and manipulation
• Soft tissue massage
• Muscle stretching
• Movement assessment
• Postural advice
• Exercise prescription
• Lifestyle and ergonomic guidance
Many patients choose osteopathy because they value the detailed assessment process and the hands-on treatment approach.
At Holme Valley Osteopathy, we take the time to understand your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and goals before creating a personalised treatment plan. If we believe another healthcare professional or treatment approach would be more appropriate for your condition, we will always advise you accordingly.
