Your initial osteopathic consultation
What to expect during your first appointment at our clinic.
Every new patient begins with an initial consultation, allowing us to understand your concerns, assess your needs, and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.
The appointment typically lasts around 45 minutes and is conducted by one of our experienced osteopaths.
Your osteopath will begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and general health. This helps us determine whether osteopathic treatment is appropriate and identify any factors that may be contributing to your condition.
You will have time to explain how your symptoms affect you, raise any concerns and discuss what you hope to achieve through treatment.
A thorough physical examination will assess your posture, movement and the area causing concern. You may be asked to perform a series of simple movements so your osteopath can evaluate how your body is functioning and identify the likely source of your symptoms.
Depending on the area being examined, you may be asked to remove or adjust some clothing. Wearing or bringing comfortable clothing, such as shorts, leggings or a vest top, can be helpful, although this is entirely optional.
Where appropriate, additional assessments such as neurological testing or blood pressure checks may also be carried out.
Using their observations and hands-on assessment, your osteopath will explain their findings clearly and discuss the available treatment options with you. You will have the opportunity to ask questions before receiving personalised recommendations designed around your individual needs and health goals.
If your osteopath believes your symptoms require further medical investigation or may not have a musculoskeletal cause, they may recommend referral to your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.
